This Way Up Development Forum: Call for Participants

BFI’s Film Audience Network is looking for a group of creative and committed individuals to join the This Way Up Development Forum. The role of Forum is to support and shape the programme for the annual conference, now in its seventh year.

Background

This Way Up (TWU) is the annual UK film exhibition innovation conference that promises to inspire and enlighten, provoke and challenge.

With audience behaviour changing at an accelerating rate it’s more crucial that This Way Up provides a space where film exhibitors come together to discuss the pressing issues, to learn about new models, new thinking and new opportunities and to meet each other to share our experiences.

TWU was created by Film Hub Scotland and Film Hub North in 2014 and is a key part of the BFI Film Audience Network’s Member Support and Development programme. The event is produced in collaboration with Film Hub Midlands with significant input from the other Hubs within the FAN and key partners of the network.

With previous editions taking place in Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow, Hull, Liverpool and Nottingham, 2020 sees This Way Up adapt to the current global health crisis. Further details on how this year’s conference will be delivered to follow.

This Way Up Development Forum

For the 2020 edition we are inviting a group of up to 8 people to support in the development of ideas, content and future ambitions.

We’re looking for curious, imaginative, inspiring, playful and engaged individuals from a range of backgrounds and with a range of specialisms. We’re looking for people with a passion; whether they be long-term professionals or volunteers doing it in their spare time.

We are hoping for genuine, insightful, constructive input from you and will be sharing information that is potentially unstructured or in early drafts so ask that this be kept in strictest confidence.

The Development Forum will: 

  • Have key experience in film exhibition and be able to visualise the potential of TWU
  • Be able to contribute to collaborative discussions thinking creatively to produce a programme of high quality
  • Be willing to work as a member of a team, to state personal convictions and, equally, to accept majority decisions and be tolerant of other views
  • Be able to act with integrity and in the best interests of the FAN, avoiding personal conflicts of interest

We’re very keen to work with people from a range of backgrounds and lived experiences, so encourage people from under-represented backgrounds – young people, socio-economically diverse, D/deaf and disabled, Black, Asian and minoritised ethnicities, LGBTQIA+ – to apply.

Y Briff

Mae Canolfan Ffilm Cymru yn chwilio am ymgynghorwyr allanol i ymchwilio ac i ddatblygu’r syniad o frand Gwnaethpwyd yng Nghymru, ar gyfer filmiau gyda chysylltiadau Cymreig. Gan adeiladu ar waith Canolfan Ffilm Cymru hyd yn hyn, a gyda chefnogaeth dros 25 o bartneriaid diwydiant (yn cynnwys BAFTA Cymru, Into Film a Ffilm Cymru Wales), ein nod ydy edrych ar sut y gallwn gynyddu ymwybyddiaeth o gynnwys sgrin Cymreig a chyflwyno’r neges yma i’r genhedlaeth ddigidol.

Gall y gwaith cwmpasu yma, a gefnogir gan Clwstwr Creadigol trwy Prifysgol Caerdydd, gynnwys:

Film Hub Wales are seeking candidates from diverse backgrounds to support the BFI FAN Access Officer with the coordination of the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN) Diversity and Inclusion project.
The post-holder will explore and debate representation on screen, in the audience and behind the camera, with the aim of creating access for all film audiences to British independent and world cinema UK wide, regardless of the barriers to attendance they may face. They will liaise with members of BFI FAN, to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the project.

We are currently applying for a further four years of funding from the British Film Institute (BFI). Any extension to the post will be subject to funding from the BFI.


Duties and Responsibilites

  • Creation of press releases for FHW and supported member[1] projects, working with appointed external PR specialists where relevant,
  • Keeping up to date with hub activities and events, proactively seeking opportunities to promote member screenings Wales and UK wide,
  • Ensuring that the Hub website and social media platforms are engaging and content is updated regularly, supporting members to engage with the online hub forum,
  • Working with filmmakers and distributors to update and promote the online preview screening room,
  • Working with the team to generate marketing ideas to support audience development across the Wales membership, including how we reach non-attenders and wider communities,
  • Explore the recommendations of FHW research with the team, such as ‘Marketing Strategy’, and ‘Understanding our Audiences’ and find ways to implement into our daily marketing,
  • Coordinating and working with specialists to deliver marketing surgeries for hub members,
  • Work on the FAN New Release Strategy and liaison with relevant UK partners,
  • Commissioning and/or creating photography/videography across projects to ensure activity is documented and shared appropriately,
  • The creation of internal/external marketing materials and monitoring, ensuring that members and FHW content meets funder guidelines,
  • Work with the Strategic Manager to update the marketing plan and evaluate its success,
  • Work with the Strategic Manager to source and raise funds for marketing,
  • Monitor changes in digital marketing and new technologies, determining how we use them,
  • Overall administrative duties as required, such as the dissemination of materials, indie box office column, FHW newsletters and audience surveys, where relevant etc.

Miscellaneous

  • Any other duties as reasonably required by the Director of Cinema and Film Hub Wales, Chief Executive or Director of Marketing.
  • To be familiar with all relevant Health and Safety, operational, personnel, customer care, Data Protection and financial procedures, ensuring that all statutory obligations are complied with, especially in relation to licensing laws and first aid.
  • The post-holder’s duties must at all times be carried out in compliance with Chapter’s Equal Opportunities policy, ensuring equality of opportunity is afforded to all persons both internal and external to Chapter.

Special Conditions

  • Flexible working hours will be required involving weekends/evenings and some travel around Wales

Essential skills/abilities

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent,
  • Experience or a good understanding of audience development,
  • A good working knowledge of film,
  • Excellent communication skills, via phone, in person and over email,
  • Ability to write copy for press and online,
  • Experience of dealing with press and media,
  • Ability to represent the Hub with confidence at public events,
  • Proactive approach to tasks, presenting creative solutions to problems,
  • Ability to work to deadlines, understanding how this impacts on team members,
  • Strong organisational and time management skills,
  • Ability to work on own initiative and on a variety of tasks,
  • IT literate, particularly in web, email campaigns, social media and design software,
  • Commitment to the BFI’s objective of extending the breadth, depth and reach of film choice for diverse audiences.

Desirable

  • Working knowledge of budgets

Contract: 20 hours per week (fixed term June – end of November 2016)

Purpose of Post

To support FHW/Chapter Cinema with the administration of a programme development fund (PDF) application to the British Film Institute (BFI), which will aim to deliver a major UK wide audience development programme, celebrating Roald Dahl on Film.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To work with the Dahl on Film Project Manager to ensure that the project is delivered on time and according to the project brief,  

Liaise with project partners on the following:

  • Sending out printed materials and gathering marketing materials,
  • Drawing up contracts,
  • Processing payments with Chapter finance and FHW’s Development Officer,
  • Collecting and processing audience data for reporting purposes,
  • Communicating reporting deadlines with partners and collating information,
  • Gathering information on upcoming events and updating online listings,
  • Monitoring progress of events and feeding back to the team,

Miscellaneous

  • Any other duties as reasonably required by the Director of Cinema and Film Hub Wales, Chief Executive or Director of Operations.
  • To be familiar with all relevant Health and Safety, operational, personnel, customer care, Data Protection and financial procedures, ensuring that all statutory obligations are complied with, especially in relation to licensing laws and first aid.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential skills/abilities

  • Further/Higher Education qualification or equivalent work-related experience
  • Numerate and literate to GCSE level/’A’ level or equivalent
  • Excellent administrative skills,
  • Ability to keep accurate budgetary records/spreadsheets/databases,
  • Good keyboard skills and excellent knowledge of Microsoft packages (including Outlook, Word and Excel),
  • Knowledge of social media and understanding of web-based marketing,
  • A good working knowledge of film,
  • Excellent communication skills, via phone, in person and over email,
  • Creative approach to problem solving,
  • Ability to work to deadlines, understanding how this impacts on team members,
  • Strong organisational and time management skills,
  • Ability to work on own initiative and on a variety of tasks,
  • Commitment to the BFI’s objective of extending the breadth, depth and reach of film choice for diverse audiences.

Desirable

  • Knowledge/experience of event coordination,
  • A working knowledge or interest in Roald Dahl,
  • Ability to speak and write in Welsh,
  • Car licence and owns own vehicle.
