Roald Dahl on Film is just one of many ways Roald Dahl is being celebrated for his 100th birthday. Wondrous events are being held across the UK as part of Roald Dahl 100.


Here are some of the experiences coming to Cardiff in the next two months:


Quentin Blake: Inside Stories

16th July 2016 – 20th November 2016

Cardiff Museum


This exhibition celebrates the work of one of the world’s most important and best-loved illustrators. Best known for his illustrations in the books of Roald Dahl, Quentin Blake’s work is recognised worldwide.


This exhibition gives a unique insight into the origins of some of Blake’s most iconic and popular creations. It includes first roughs and storyboards, many never shown before, with finished artwork to demonstrate how ideas evolved, often in close collaboration with the authors.

The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl

12th August 2016 – 14th January 2017

Wales Millennium Centre


Embark on a magical and interactive journey and discover the secrets of a writer beloved by children of all ages. Learn about Roald Dahl’s extraordinary life and the surprising inspiration for his most famous characters and stories.


The tour features unique items from the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre archives. Plus there are interactive installations to spark the imagination – and even test your own powers of creativity. Squirm your way through curious spaces as you step inside this Wondercrump World.

Wonderman: Cardiff

12th -18th September 2016

Following a three-week run at the Edinburgh Festival Friend, multi-award-winning theatre company Gagglebabble will return to Wales with their unique gig-theatre take on Roald Dahl’s short stories for adults.


Combining a sizzling hot score of original live music, macabre characters, and thrilling twists and turns, all injected with a wicked sense of dark humour, Wonderman tells the story of a WWII RAF pilot who finds himself in a hospital bed, badly injured. As he slips in and out of a world of dream, hallucinations and nightmare, we’re taken down the strange and unexpected corridors and rabbit holes of Roald Dahl’s mind.

City of the Unexpected

17th – 19th September 2016

Across Cardiff


The Welsh capital will become a place where reality is turned on its head, and where the laws of physics, logic and the predictable will give way to magic, fun, invention and the surreal, as if Roald Dahl himself is at the helm.


This epic weekend will involve a cast of thousands of performers from across the city and jaw-dropping spectacles. Immerse yourself in everything from large-scale events to intimate performances – all staged across Cardiff’s streets and public spaces, in shops and arcades, at iconic buildings and parks.
